At the request of the European Economic and Social Committee, EU-turn took part in setting up a sustainable house made of wooden pallets, in the heart of Brussels, from 20 September to 4 October 2009.
The ‘Pallet house’, designed by Austrian architecture students Andreas Claus Schnetzer and Gregor Pils, is a large-scale example of energy efficiency and innovation. The use of pallets makes it possible to change the size of the house easily. The building can therefore be used as a temporary shelter, a first aid centre or a family home. The project won first prize in the sustainable architecture competition GAU:DI 2008, organised by the ’Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine’ [City of architecture and heritage] and the ‘Centre international pour la Ville, l’Architecture et le Paysage’ (CIVA) [International Centre for Urbanism, Architecture and Landscape]. Our team looked after the logistics, the organisation of different activities, coordination between the partners and the media outreach.
